MEDICAL CLINICS

Last week Dr. Karen McCarthy and her team from Jacksonville, Florida came to do 5 clinics. They did clinics here at Coram Deo on Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday and at 2 other sites on Thursday and Friday. They worked quickly trying to help as many people as possible. At the end of the week they had seen and treated around 2,500 people. The last clinic day on Saturday was unbelievable in the desperation of people wanting to get seen. People were already in front of the gates at 4:00am and by the time we wanted to let people in there was a large crowd. They pushed and shoved and the stronger were at the front. We focused on getting in the elderly and the mothers with young children and babies first, but before we could do that we had to get almost all the guys involved at creating a human chain for protecting the weak from the jostling strong. We had to do the same for the medical team. By the time we got the elderly and children inside we had a lot of people in the yard. Saturday was a half day clinic but the team worked full speed to help as many as they could and they probably saw about 400 people.

I read in an article today that crime is increasing in Port-au-Prince. Maybe this same desperation is being shown by those wanting to get medical care. This past Saturday was the most difficult time we had ever for crowd control. We give the Lord thanks for all those that received medical care through Dr. Karen's team.

This week we are working with Dr. Ed with medical clinics. The desperation of people wanting medical care continued again today but we were better prepared for it this time. Nikki, who has been staying with us for the week helped at organizing patient registration. Dr. Ed did some teeth pulling here today and from one persons mouth he pulled out 6 rotten teeth. Ed Amos and the team from New Hampshire will be having clinics for the entire week. They spent today here at Coram Deo, Tuesday will be in Cite Soleil, Wednesday at Adoration Christian School, Thursday in the mountains of Kenscoff with Pastor Pierre and Friday in Canaan with Pastor Marcelin, which is a large refuge camp on Rte. National #1. Pray for safety and for all those who will be seen at these clinics. We give the Lord thanks for medical personnel who come to Haiti to provide medical care.
