ARTICLE - P-A-P - ELECTRICITY DEPRIVATION

PORT-AU-PRINCE AND SURROUNDING AREAS COULD BE DEPRIVED OF ELECTRICITY
(Haiti Libre) -

The Electricity of Haiti (EDH), following a correspondence from of Bureau of Mines and Energy (BME), outlining the operation of a sand quarry near electricity pylons on Morne à Cabri, wishes to alert the public about a serious situation, which could affect the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince.

Indeed, on Morne à Cabri, near the pylons #97, #98 and #101, is a sand quarry already closed several times by the judicial authorities. The uncontrolled exploitation of this quarry calls into question the stability of the pylons that support transmission lines of 115,000 volts. A possible fall of the pylons, would have important consequences to the metropolitan area. In addition to causing a reduction in the supply of Port-au-Prince in electricity, it could lead to cases of electrocution.

In order to avoid another disaster to the country, the EdH wishes to inform the general public that it has already alerted the authorities, sent a letter to the Departmental Director of the West of the PNH, whose copy was sent to the Minister of Public Works Transport and Communication, and to the authorities concerned to take appropriate action.

Recall that already in August 2011, the Haitian Council of Non State Actors (CONHANE), the Civil Society Initiative (CSI), and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Centre joined their forces, to denounce the unregulated and wild exploitation of sand quarries on Morne à Cabrit; noting that the quarry operators had dug sand in an irresponsible and criminal manner at the base of pylon numbers 97-101, that carry high voltage electricity from the Péligre Dam to Port-au-Prince. Note among other things, that the pylon bearing the number 100 is threatening to fall at any time...

8 months later the EdH is sounding the alarm, but so far nothing has been done...
