NINE GUNMEN ON MOTORCYCLES MURDER POLICE OFFICER, INJURE OTHERS
(Defend Haiti) -
PORT-DE-PAIX - A squad of nine gunmen on motorcycles opened fire Monday morning on a police patrol killing one police officer, in a serious incident, which occurred near the bus station to Port-de-Paix, on boulevard La Saline, at the entrance to wharf Jeremie.
Injured with several projectiles, the officer Serge Casséus, from the 15th promotion of the Haitian National Police, and assigned to the police station in La Saline, died from his wounds at the time of evacuation to a hospital; as told to Radio Kiskeya by the Deputy Spokesman of the Haitian National Police, Garry Desrosiers.
Perfectly coordinated, this spectacular criminal attack was triggered well before the bandits reached their target. Two other officers, who were at a fixed point in the company of the victim, were uninjured.
All armed and three to a motorcycle, the killers managed to escape after sowing panic in the busy commercial center of the capital.
Serge Casséus is one more recorded victim known within law enforcement, says the deputy spokesman of National Police calling for vigilance and cooperation of the population to put the gangs out of harm's way.
A significant upsurge in insecurity for several weeks has been observed in the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince, where several public figures, including former Governor of the Central Bank under President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, Venel Joseph, were killed.
