ONI IS PREPARING FOR THE NEXT ELECTIONS
(Haiti Libre) -
Since Thursday's meeting at the National Palace, between representatives of the Haitian Government and Ambassadors accredited to Haiti, in order to reaffirm to the international community the government's desire to organize, as soon as possible, the next legislative and municipal elections, the National Identification Office [present at the meeting] is preparing to take measures for the next elctions and prepare the voters list on time.
Jean Baptiste St-Cyr, the Director General of ONI explained, "The Minister of Foreign Affairs held a big meeting to make commitments to hold elections as soon as possible [...] ONI is a key partner, it is us who must provide to the Electoral Council the list of potential voters .... We made a commitment to accompany the process, because we know that when we have elections, we will have a great influx, and we have already said that we will take measures to anticipate, so that we can prepare the voters list on time [...] what I would like clarify is that ONI registers citizens in its 143 offices around the country. We do this every day, from 8am to 4pm. It's not only at election time that we give cards. However, we still record a great influx of people who come to make their card at election time.
To anticipate this situation, we have already set sail for the elections. We are acting as if they were to take place tomorrow... We will increase our number of offices, and operators, and greatly reduce the turnaround time for cards through the purchase of new equipment [...] We are currently working on a contingency plan, where we will list the measures that we will take with the costs. It is from this list, that we will send a request to find the funding, and be able to answer all the points that I have mentioned..."
