THE MAYOR OF PORT-AU-PRINCE REFUSES TO LEAVE HIS POSITION

Muscadin Jean-Yves Jason, the Mayor of Port-au-Prince, Thursday denounced the decision of President Martelly to dismiss the Municipal Council he heads, appointing in its place a Municipal Commission of 3 members [Gabrielle Hyacinthe (President), Jean Marie Descorbett, and Junior Gérald Estimé (Members)]
Denouncing "a coup against the municipal government of Port-au-Prince", he announced that he had no intention of leaving office.
The Mayor indicated that he will in accordance with the municipal order of 23 December 2010, activate the Security Council communal. "This order gives us the prerogative to assess the situation and take appropriate action against anyone who tries to break the law in the country," adding that the Security Council will have as its' tasks to redefine, among others, the priorities and strategies faced in what he calls "the evolutive delinquency" of the Government.
"The central government wants to intimidate the mayors by revoking them," estimates the mayor of Port-au-Prince, referring to the nominations by Presidential Order dated January 18, 2012 of 13 communal commissions.
In his capacity of Special Adviser of the National Federation of Haitian Mayors (FeNaMH), the mayor of Port-au-Prince launched an appeal for resistance to the mayors of the revoked cartels, and asks them to stay or or return to their posts until the next elections. Recalling that the provisions of the 48th Legislature, states that elected officials should be replaced by elected officials, he stated that, "the rule of law cannot be ignored !"
