HAITIAN SENATE DEMANDS NO IMMUNITY FOR MINUSTAH
(Prensa Latina) -

Port au Prince - The Haitian Senate approved on Thursday a resolution to demand the end of impunity for blue helmets deployed here as part of a stabilization mission, accused of alleged sex offenses.

A group of Pakistani troops, members of the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) are under investigation for abusing a young man in Gonaives, northern Haiti.

According to HPN Haiti.com, the Haitian Congress members approved unanimously the document to demand the abolition of the legal rule that prevents blue helmets from being tried.

As in other countries with UN peacekeepers, the UN grants total immunity to the more than 11,000 MINUSTAH troops, who can only be judged in their countries of origin and by military courts.

The latest sex scandal for alleged rape follows a similar case occurred in September last year, when five Uruguayan troops were accused of abusing a 18-year old Haitian youngster.

They have been free since last month after returning to their country, which has triggered protests by Haitian civil organizations.
