HAITI RECALLS AMBASSADOR TO THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
(Defend Haiti) -

PORT-AU-PRINCE - A sign of straining relations, Haiti's ambassador to the Dominican Republic was recalled for consultations, announced the Haitian Secretary of State of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Richard Casimir did send greetings and words of thankfulness to Dominican leaders, but said he understood the need to mitigate recent measures of the Dominicans by holding negotiations with Haitian authorities.

Working sessions are planned to take place between representatives of both countries in Port-au-Prince, to provide solutions to problems that have recently arisen.

Last month the Haitian Ambassador to the Dominican Republic, Fritz Cineas, made a statement asking that Dominican authorities have respect for the fundamental rights of Haitians in their territory.

An immediate reaction from the Dominican Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carlos Morales Troncoso, was to require that all requests for visas for Haitians to work or attend school in the Dominican Republic, pass through his ministry. Furthermore, applications will now require bank account information, details of residence in the D.R., and letters requesting the applicant to enter D.R.; among other documents.

Secretary Casimir did shine an encouraging light as he delivered the news of the ambassador's recall. Casimir said that "business diplomacy, promoted by the current Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe during the Martelly-Conille government as he held the office of Foreign Affairs is beginning to bring results."

Casimir announced that there will soon be the arrival of trade missions from several countries and potential foreign investors. He also mentioned that the change of image outside of Haiti has valued private investment at hundreds of millions of dollars.
