ARTICLE - MARTELLY MEETS JUDGES

PRESIDENT MARTELLY MET ALL THE JUDGES OF THE COURT OF CASSATION

On Tuesday, President Michel Martelly, held an important meeting at the National Palace, with all the judges of the Court of Cassation, on a series of proposals and decisions to take for the smooth functioning of judicial power, its preparation for new technologies and modern tools, and its authority and impartiality.

Important issues were raised, such as the independence of the three powers, the restoration of the authority and the respect of judicial power, the revision of salaries of the judges. The interlocutors also reflected on the pension of judges, and the implementation of new laws with the prescriptions of the Haitian Constitution.

The Head of State, aware of various problems confronted by the judicial system, discussed the situations that, often, hinder the process of modernization and professionalization of the system. For example, the training of justices of the peace, the implementation of a program of local judges, and the functioning and effectiveness of the Superior Council of Judicial Powers (CSPJ).

Important questions were also addressed, such as the restoration and modernization of the Library of the Court of Cassation, the reissue of the Bulletin on decisions of this Court, the erection of new Chambers that can effectively intervene in civil, criminal, constitutional and commercial affairs, the subscription of the judges of the Court of Cassation within a competitive health insurance, and staffing of appropriate logistical means, in order to maintain their effectiveness and ensure their independence in any event.

The President has renewed his support to the Court of Cassation, and reaffirmed his determination to accompany the Judges of this Court, for the restoration of a genuine rule of law in Haiti.
