REHABILITATION PROGRAMS FOR THE PRISONERS OF NORTH
(Haiti Libre) -

As part of a project of educational support and strengthening security, more than 600prisoners in detention centers in Cap-Haitien and Grande Rivière du Nord [in the Northern Region] have benefitted from a literacy project since May 2011. This project is funded by the Minustah within the framework of its Quick Impact Projects (QIPs) to the tune of USD$14,286.16 and is executed by the international NGO CARITAS.

Through an audio-visual teaching method, the project aims to literate persons subjected to detention, provide the necessary materials to inmates who wish to exercise the art of painting or sewing, and provide reading books for the establishment of prison libraries.

The educated prisoners, are called upon to train in their turn other prisoners sentenced to at least one year in prison. People in custody awaiting trial don't have access to this program.

About 550 inmates from the prison of Cap-Haitien, including twenty women and 10 underage boys benefit from this project, which should also be enjoyed by the 70 inmates of the prison of Grande Rivière du Nord. The purpose of this program is to increase the capacity of social rehabilitation of prisoners before their return to society, to reduce the risk of criminal recidivism by increasing the chances of finding a job.
