CHOLERA KILLS 724 IN HAITI

PORT-AU-PRINCE - THE toll in Haiti from cholera has soared to 724, an increase of more than 80 deaths overnight including three more in the capital Port-au-Prince, health officials said Thursday.
The total number of infections was now above 11,000, a rise of more than 1,000 from Wednesday's figures, the Haitian health ministry announced.
The outbreak erupted in the Artibonite River valley in central Haiti in mid-October and initially seemed to have been contained, but the toll has risen sharply in recent days and has now reached Port-au-Prince.
Most of the estimated 1.3 million Haitians living in refugee camps are in tent cities around the capital and water-borne cholera could spread easily in the unsanitary conditions where supplies are shared for cooking and washing.
