PORT-AU-PRINCE - Five Brazilian soldiers of the U.N. mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) were sent back to their country for having pointed their weapons at customs agents at the Toussaint Louverture International Airport, in Port-au-Prince, on June 5, 2011
Customs agents proceeded, on June 5, with routine checks of baggage of many travelers from Miami. Customs officers had found that some of these passengers (UN Soldiers) were carrying taxable objects.
Suddenly, a group of armed soldiers of MINUSTAH broke into the airport to stop the audit work of the customs, luggage was taken with their "colleagues" before returning to their armored vehicle. Once outside, soldiers fired shots into the air before leaving.
An investigation has been opened by the UN Mission for Stabilization in Haiti (MINUSTAH) in order to clarify the issue. The results of the investigation have enabled the UN mission to take necessary measures, according to Claire Berthiaume, assistant military spokesperson. Ms. Berthiaume said that the mission decided to prohibit its military personnel from carrying weapons on the premises of the airport.
"No military personnel of MINUSTAH is allowed to carry weapons within the confines of the airport unless they have express permission from the commander of the military force," she said.
