This mother comes from the Milot area of Haiti in the north part of the country. Her baby was born with spina bifida. She stayed with her child at our house for a month before surgery. She was one of the first cases operated on.
The first surgery was to seal the spina bifida bulge on her back. A couple of days later the baby had another surgery on his brain to do a ventriculoscopy.
Joanne is the cook everytime the surgeries take place. She enjoys preparing the meals for the parents of the hospital and understands the struggles of a hydrocephalus parent. She had a hydrocephalus child who is now living with an adoptive family in the United States.
Paulna and Ti-Ben enjoy helping out too. It is good to see how enthusiastic these young people are to lend a hand at bringing food to the hospital.
The hospital room is air conditioned and some of the mothers bundled up their children!
