ARTICLE - SENATOR JEANTY - IMPOSED PM

SENATOR JEANTY SAYS PM-PICK GARRY CONILLE WAS IMPOSED BY INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY
(Defend Haiti) - By Samuel Maxime

PORT-AU-PRINCE - Senator Jean William Jeanty took this past weekend and Monday to describe the current political climate and how it threatens the nation's democracy and sovereignty.

In totality, the third Senator from the Nippes Department personifies the threat of the Prime Minister-designate, Garry Conille. On a couple of recent radio broadcasts he described how "the nation's dependency on the international community would soon lead us to accept the unacceptable; in this case, Dr. Conille."

The senator finds that the ratification of Conille as Prime Minister would be unconstitutional as it violates ARTICLE 157-5 of the Constitution of Haiti. The article states that to be appointed prime minister a person must reside in Haiti for 5 consecutive years. On Radio Kiskeya on Saturday the senator reported that Conille had not lived in Haiti since 2004 and had not maintained property or paid taxes since 2007.

Senator Jeanty also said "there is not a person in Haiti who doesn't know that it was the international community who designated Garry Conille for Prime Minister." This goes directly against statements released by the president following a favorable vote in the lower house for Garry Conille, in which he, Michel Martelly, said "I was the visionary, the elected; the people chose me and I have made my choice..."

The Senator says that the nearly unanimous vote in the lower house did not surprise him; saying that "recent visits by diplomats were to ensure Conille's passage." In recent weeks many visits were made: Cheryl Mills, representative of Hillary Clinton, wife to Bill Clinton and Secretary of State of the United States. There were visits from two Vice-Presidents from the World Bank and Bill Clinton also met with members of the G16 in the senate.

Senator Jeanty said that the first time any of his colleagues in the senate met Dr. Conille was "during a convocation with the Interim Haiti Recovery Commission (CIRH). He [Conille] accompanied Bill Clinton (the commission's co-chairman, former U.S. President and Head of the United Nations Envoy to Haiti). At this senate meeting Conille had been the translator for Clinton."

In totality, the senator describes the enormous conflicts of interests; having a United Nations official, Garry Conille, who also was Chief of Staff for Bill Clinton, the UN Envoy, and who will now co-chair the CIRH with Clinton; who is husband to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. This as a vulnerability to sovereignty and the building of a strong state.

Functioning Problems

Monday morning on Radio Vision 2000, Senator Jeanty went into detail at how the CIRH has undermined the work of parliament and executives, saying that no one knows how much money is coming in; how much is going out and where it is going. He says that there are no checks and balances to what the commission does.

Senator Jeanty says that when an international body controls 70% of the money that the nation has, it has control of what the country does.
