FOREIGN DIPLOMATS CALL FOR HAITI VOTE VERIFICATION COMMITTEE
(Wall Street Journal) - AFP
PORT-AU-PRINCE --Ambassadors accredited to Haiti called Sunday for the creation of a special commission to verify the results of last month's contested presidential election.
In a joint statement, the ambassadors encouraged "the use of all legal means to advance a credible electoral process in order to guarantee that the final results fully reflect the will of the Haitian voters."
They specifically endorsed a proposal for the Provisional Electoral Council to put in place a special commission to verify the votes cast November 28 in the first round of presidential elections.
Violent protests swept the country last week after President Rene Preval's handpicked protege made it through to a second round run-off in flawed elections, edging out a popular opposition candidate by less than 7,000 votes.
