VENEZUELA SUBMARINE CABLE TO CUBA, JAMAICA, HAITI, D.R. TO BEGIN OPERATIONS IN FIRST PHASE

CARACAS, Venezuela - The submarine fiber optic cable known as ALBA-1, which began construction in July 2010 will go into operation next month in its first phases connecting Venezuela to Jamaica and Cuba.
Venezuelan Minister of Science, Technologies and Intermediate Industries, Recardo Menéndez, in a government press release said that the 1,800 km network, linking Venezuela to Cuba and Cuba to Jamaica is at its completion and will begin providing more internet access to the two countries.
Menédez explained that the telecommunication system is currently in the testing phase, which will end on June 23.
The project will enter into a second phase connecting Jamaica to Haiti and Haiti to Dominican Republic. With thousands of kilometers of cable and a transmission capacity of 640 gigabytes of information, the fibre optic cable required an investment of $ 72 million for its first phase alone.
