HAITI - CLIMATE: REVIEW OF THE SITUATION BY DEPARTMENT - JUNE 8

Our country has been confronted for the last several days with heavy rains, particularly in the departments of the South, Nippes, Grande-Anse, Artibonite, North,
North West, and Northeast. Here is a review of the situation, and an assessment of damage. This article covers the highlights until June 7, 2011 7pm.

In the Department of the Centre there were two victims; in Nippes one, and in the Department of the West 20 victims, 6 missing and 8 wounded. In this same department 470 houses were damaged, 14 destroyed and there are 484 victims.

Situation for the department of West:

- in Carrefour the situation is critical between Mariani and the club Le Lambi.

- camps are affected to the 2nd ruelle des Rails (tents destroyed).

- flood overflows of the river Froide.

- a landslide was reported at the street Diquini prolongee, Cité Tama.

- flood to Caillot.

- one person lost their life at the camp Ti-Source.

- in Cité Soleil, the waters have reached up to the 50cm level of some houses.

- Local residents took refuge on the roofs in Ti Haïti, Bonocourt, Vaudreuil, Sarthe, Tèt Dlo.

- Urgent need of evacuations were reported. Steps have been taken in this direction. Shelters planned to house: Ecole Joseph Hervé, Sarthe 55, Street Germain, and CEEH, Street Larco. This last site can accommodate 1,000 families.

- in Delams, the zones of Delmas 31/Hôpital La Paix, Caltapasse, Philo, Delmas 17, Nan Citron (Road cut) are flooded.

- Houses collapsed in Delmas 40 B.

- Floods in Maïs Gâté, Petit Place Cazeau.

- in Gressier the section Morne à bateau is completely flooded.

- Cité Estinvalle and Zone Silo are flooded.

- in Pétion-Ville, 2 victims in Nerrette, 7 victims in Pegguy Ville (Georges Sylvain) and 4 in Jacquet.

- in Port-au-Prince, the zones of Ravine Pintade, Camps Théâtre national; Stade Sylvio Cator, Route Piste, Centre Geskhio, Vallée de Bourdon, Cité l'Éternel, Rue Capois, Rue Oswald Durand are flooded.

- in Tabarre, the camps Terre Roche, Dortoir Aristide, Camps Tabarre are flooded.

- fallen trees at Clercin 22.

- flooding in the zones of Tabarre 47, 48, 14, 27 and 52, Carrefour Rita, Clercine 12

- in Thomazeau, after the evacuation of 56 families on Sunday, a part of the families of Fond Chalet (Thomazeau), who did not want to leave, later evacuated by themselves and went downtown.

- in the department of Artibonite; increase in river levels; no flooding.

- in the Center department, a 14 year old girl was the victim of a landslide in Samanah, and a woman aged 60 lost her life while crossing the river Thomonde.

- in the Grand-Anse department, intermittent rains in all the communes, no overflow of rivers, but flood awareness still continues through the press. The precautionary evacuation is voluntary. The mobilization of all committees continues.

- For the Nippes, the rains of the night of June 6, 2011 caused extensive damage.

- The instructions are given on the radio and young people are mobilized for raising awareness of proximity. Awareness is reinforced on floods and cholera.

The synoptic situation is as follows :

- in Baradères, the city is flooded from the plain to downtown. The waters have reached up to 2.50 m in some places, in the old part of the city.

- one person died (a man in his thirties, living in Vincendron, who tried to cross the river.

- Sixty-four people are sheltered in the Ecole nationale des Baradères.

- in Anse à Veau, the Grande Rivière and the Rivière Froide are still in flood.

- in Plaisance, landslides are found at Pins, Morne Mardi Gras.

- the Grande Rivière of Plaisance is in flood.

- loss of food (beans, bananas...) are reported.

- all activities (economic, educational and cultural) are paralyzed.

- in l'Azile, the rivers Serpent and Despins are still in flood.

- A house is flooded at the entrance to the city. The occupants have had time to evacuate.

- in Petite Rivière, the mitigation works have allowed rivers to stay in their beds.

- in Petit Trou, agricultural damage has been recorded in the 2nd and 3rd communal sections. The shelters are empty.

- in Paillant, Monday night, it rained; on Tuesday morning, the town was shrouded in fog at the level of the urban center.

- in Salagnac, 1st section, there was a breakthrough of sunshine.

- in Miragoâne, the weather is good. Activities took place during the day as usual.

- in the section Miragoâne - Reynolds is still very muddy.

In the department of the North there is light rain on some communes. Strengthening of the awareness and coordination meetings are held.

- in the northeast, heavy rains.

- in the North-west, wet weather. strengthening of the awareness.

- in the south, no rain. Decisions of overflying of department are halted for Wednesday for the evaluation of isolated areas.

- in the Southeast, the flood recession has begun; The sky is partly cloudy. No rainfall

- the rivers of Fesles of Marogot, Guimbie of Belle-Anse and Grande-Rivière of Bainet are in flood, but the crossing in vehicle (4x4) is still possible. No damage or casualties cases reported. Interventions were made by the Departmental Technical Coordinator at the level of the local press to keep the population informed of the weather situation. Permanent contact is maintained with local authorities and humanitarian actors to continue to alert the population.
