We were at Jonel's house on the 1st to change his dressing. His mother had just finished preparing the family's pumpkin soup. Throughout Haiti this is what people ate for their first meal of the day. In the times of slavery the owners ate this soup but the slaves were never allowed to have it. January 1st is also independance day here in Haiti. The first day of Independance is commemorated by eating this soup because they are slaves no more.
There is a new playground park on the mayor's road between Delmas 31 and Delmas 33. On New Years' Eve there must have been at least 100 children playing here.
The man in this picture is the symbol "Neg Mawon". This is the symbol for the freedom fighters. Underneath is written "Respe ak Libete" (Respect and Liberty).
The grafitti on the third panel says "Yon Sel Ras". We talked with the community group who put up these grafitti symbols. "Yon Sel Ras" means "Only One Race". The fist bump in the picture represents respect one for another. This community group along with similar groups across the city want to build the country and want to participate in changing it. They say that only the Haitian people can make the changes. We are one race in God's eyes. Pray that 2010 be the year where people in the world will see the country working together as "Yon Sel Ras".
