photos - visitors - part 2

As we were walking through the village this mother wanted her picture taken with her son. It was nice and quiet in the village and the people were friendly. Where we had problems was on the main road heading back to Croix des Bouquets. A group of around 30 young guys had blocked the main road but the leader of the group let us through. A couple of the other guys in the group didn't like that idea and whipped the people sitting in the bed of the pick-up truck with a branch. Some excitement for the journey home! Tim's behind wasn't too sore :)
There are always people in the yard and under the shade of a tree is a cool place to relax and work on the computer or play games.
Whitney (green shirt) is enjoying a handheld video game. The young guy next to him looks kind of bored.
Johnny found out last week that he passed his Rheto state exams. This means he has a secondary school graduation diploma for part 1. Part 2 is Philo. It was his second effort at writing the state exam. He will register in Philo this year.
Macdonald is handy with the computer. Tonight he figured out what was wrong with our old computer that wouldn't boot up. He did some tests and then removed the memory card and said to get another one. It is no longer any good Tomorrow we'll get another one.

With the cholera epidemic taking place here in Haiti we have been focusing on hygiene with the students. Here Michelle is handing out a washcloth, soap, toothbrush and toothpaste to the students.

Anje helped hand things out too. The children are happy to receive these gifts. Even simple things like soap and toothpaste are sometimes unaffordable for the families of our students.

Hurricane Tomas was going to pass by Haiti and we finished up as much work as could be done. The last project for the visitors was to build a school shelter for one of the classes. William is helping to bring the wood to the back. The day the storm was supposed to hit we went to Cite Soleil for a medical clinic and the guys stayed back to build the shelter. It was a race to finish both the clinic and the school shelter before the arrival of Hurricane Tomas.

Storm clouds were brewing and we headed out of Cite Soleil by 4:00pm.

Jeff and the boys did their work and finished building the school shelter too. It was fun to get as much work done before the storm started and everything got done! It sure is great when visitors come down to help. We were so busy while the visitors were here that I actually forgot about them when it came to meals a couple of times. They were good about it though.

There are several fields that the children use. They come in sandals and their own shoes and the soccer uniforms and shoes are provided for them while they play and practise.

These fields give the poor children from the slums an opportunity to just be kids and play soccer.

There is a lot of camaraderie amongst the children.

The children are proud to be able to attend the program.

Quite a few games were going on while we were there.

The children enjoy playing basketball.

Everyone is enjoying the presence of visitors in the yard again. The children also enjoy playing dominoes!

Today we got some Feed My Starving Children rice meals from Love a Child. It is amazing right now how much food assistance is coming in. It makes it easier to deal with all the requests for food assistance from the community.

Johnny is showing off his strength in carrying in the "boxes of Manna".

Reginald wanted to show his strength too!
