HAITIAN CEP OFFICIAL QUESTIONS ELECTION RESULTS, RESIGNS
(Xinhua) -
SANTO DOMINGO - An official at Haiti's Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) has resigned after disagreeing with the council's decisions before it released the final results of last month's legislative elections, local media said Tuesday.
CEP official Ginette Cherubin, in a letter to the CEP president dated April 24 and published by Haitian local media Tuesday, questioned the results of the legislative election.
The decisions made by the CEP were not in accordance with the established election rules and might have affected the final outcome of the legislative election, Cherubin said.
Moreover, she said there had been irregularities when the votes were counted, and that the National Electoral Tribunal had favored a certain candidate.
She did not say which candidate it had favored.
The CEP declared popular singer Michel Martelly the official winner of the presidential election last week in a landslide victory with over 67 percent of the vote.
However, a number of complaints and accusations were filed over fraud and other irregularities in the legislative election.
Sporadic protests have erupted since the election results were announced, killing at least one and injuring several others.
