This baby was put into the intensive care unit and was hooked up to some monitoring machines. What a big step forward for the program! Intensive care just never happened before in Haiti. With the assitance of medical personnel from the United States this is now a possibility for Haiti.Pray for all the volunteers that come through Project Medishare to help out here in Haiti.
Judna had an infected shunt from a prior surgery.She had the shunt removed, received antibiotics and then had another surgery to place another shunt. Her mother lovingly stayed by her side. She was in hospital for at least 3 weeks and the mother didn't have to pay anything for the care that was received.
Sadly, one of the surgery patients died. This boy suddenly stopped breathing due to a post-op complication. He was placed on a respirator but died early the next morning. It was difficult for the mother but we told her that she did her best for her child and that God would bless her. We know that this baby is in heaven and suffering no more.
It is good that the neurosurgery team still decided to undergo the surgeries even though the cholera epidemic was active. During the time of the surgeries the cholera epidemic was growing in Haiti. At Bernard Mevs/Project Medishare Hospital they had put up these tents to serve as isolation areas for patients coming in with diarrhea, vomiting symptoms. This hospital is now receiving cases although they don't have much room. Only 5-8 cases can be hospitalized at the same time. Others are told to go to other Cholera Treatment Centers located throughout the city.
This young baby has a meningeocele. Part of the brain grows out in the area between the eyes. Treatment can not be done in Haiti. The administration at the hospital called in the parents to see how they could help the family. Maybe with all the personnel coming to Haiti that a hospital will be found to take on the case! Keep this child and his family in prayer.
