photos - hydrocephalus surgeries - part 1

Something special happened at the end of October too! A neurosurgery team from St. Louis came to the Bernard Mevs/Project Medishare Hospital to perform hydrocephalus surgeries. We brought a couple of children who had already had surgeries for post-op checks.

Guerdson Delile and his parents came all the way from the Jeremie area. It is a 12-hour bus ride to Port-au-Prince over bumpy roads.

Guerdeson's father wanted his picture taken with his cell phone.

Calwens Sanon and his mother came from the Marmelade area. He was there for a post-op check as well.

Vanessa Jules is an active little girl. She can sit by herself and her mother is working on getting her to stand. She talks well for her age. I think that one day she will be able to walk. Pray that Vanessa continues to make good progress. The family lives near the Dominican Republic border in the Fond Verrette area.

When the medical team arrived at the hospital they quickly got to work. These curious mothers are looking in.

Each child was evaluated before being admitted to the hospital.

Maggy of Project Medishare is taking this doctor's photos. Project Medishare pays for the cat scans for the children as well as co-ordinating with the director of the hospital, government and medical team making these neurosurgeries possible here in Haiti.

This doctor is examining one of the patients before sending to surgery.

These 2 members of the medical team are carrying this child to the operating room.

Here is a photo of the University of Miami neurosurgery team. The surgeries went well!

The mothers did a good job looking after their babies after they came out of surgery. You can see the look of concern on the face of this mother as she holds her crying child.

Once the children were bright-eyed and drinking the mother's faces relaxed to one of joy that their child received the help that they needed.

Calwens' mother and big sister are sitting with him after his surgery. Calwens had a shunt put in. This is the 2nd surgery for him. Hopefully he will not need any more surgeries.

This is Joey who is the abandoned baby from Cite Soleil that Chris took in to His Home for Children. He had some seizures after his surgery but he is now doing well. He is a cute baby! Pray he recovers and that a family is found to adopt him.

This is Phara Simeon and her mother before surgery. She had traveled to the United States for surgery but her head continued to increase in size when she returned back to Haiti.

Here Pharah is relaxing in bed after her surgery. This time she had a shunt put in. Pray that there will be no infection or post-op problems for her. Her mother has 8 children.

Paulna was babysitter for the day to help look after John Charles. She did a good job!

Here is John Charles after surgery. His brain has been damaged by the increased pressure on the brain. At least with the surgery he will now be more comfortable. He will return to the Food for the Poor orphanage once he is discharged.

Cawens Sanon, the young baby from Gonaives is doing well after surgery.
