THE CITY HALL OF PORT-AU-PRINCE PRESENTS ITS' MUNICIPAL PLAN OF EDUCATION

Last Friday, the Town Hall of Port-au-Prince presented its Municipal Plan of Education focused on education, citizenship and the environment, which aims for the emergence of a new society.
Nadège Joachim Augustin explained, ... "this local education policy states that while in school, children are not there just to learn to read and write [...] there are a lot of things that need to be integrated into an education, so that the children know not just to read and write, ... but that we train children to become citizens. The two points that are most important in our local education plan this year, are education for citizenship and the environment [...]
With citizenship, we want to train people [...] to live in a society, have good manners, and a know-how [...] We also train learners, This means that when a child l leaves school he is ready to continue to learn [...] We want to rebuild their spirit, help it to rebuild their life, to become a useful person today and also tomorrow, ... an ambassador to create a new society.
[...] If you look at the environmental aspect, we really need a support for the environment. [...] We must start with very young children because they have an ease of learning, an open mind and they are the ones that are destined to become tomorrow's society [...] We believe this is the most durable investment that we can do on this issue with children.
We want to reform society through the education that we give to the children. Today, it is not a tool that we have done for the City Council. It is a tool for the city, for the municipal schools, for education. For us or any other council that will come after us, it is a tool that will continue to serve education [...]
This policy is applicable in municipal schools. It is the nationas education that deals with schooling in general, but we have full power over municipal schools. This program can be applied, because it is not a program that comes from the the program proposed by the national education. It is only one way that we have chosen to offer this program..."
