ARTICLE - FUTURE OF MINUSTAH

TOMORROW THURSDAY, IMPORTANT DAY FOR THE FUTURE OF THE MINUSTAH
(Haiti Libre) -

The Ministers of Defence and Foreign Affairs of the countries of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) which have peacekeepers in Haiti, will meet tomorrow Thursday in Montevideo [Uruguay] from 10:00am, at the Air Force Club in Carrasco, to discuss a possible "gradual withdrawal" of troops in Haiti. The Ministers of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Guatemala, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay will be present at the meeting.

This possibility has been raised for months, particularly by Brazil, who heads the Peace Mission of the UN since 2004, and they estimate that it is necessary to gradually reduce their presence of the Mission in Haiti.

Monday, on the BBC Brasil, Mr. Celso Amorim, the new Brazilian Minister of Defense, said that the maintenance of troops in Haiti would not be beneficial for Haiti in the long term. These comments have been confirmed Tuesday by the press office of the Ministry of Defence, which clarified that there was no calendar to begin the troop withdrawals.

The UN mission, which was always intended to be temporary, currently has more than 12,000 personnel in Haiti.
