THE PRIME MINISTER TALKS ABOUT ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECTS FOR 2012
(Haiti Libre) -

In order to inform the population of actions of the Government, the Prime Minister, Dr. Garry Conille outlined some of the projects that the Haitian government intended to achieve during the year 2012. Recalling that with 1.5% of vegetation cover in Haiti, the question of the environment is a big problem and that the government intends to take action.

"...Haiti today, with less than 1.5% of vegetation cover, the question of the environment is a big problem for us all, and every year that we wait to make massive interventions on the environment is one year too late. That is why we will start to counteract the alarming deterioration of the environment in the country. We plan to increase forest cover up to 3.5% over the next 5 years. This is a great ambition, but we believe that we can achieve it. Initiatives in watershed management, reforestation and promotion of renewable energy will intensify in 2012.

Environmental projects to be implemented in 2012 are too numerous to mention... We can mention among others: the program of a green border in the area of the Southeast and Northeast, which aims at reforestation and revegetation; at the level of trans-border watersheds, we have also the restoration of the vegetation and the management of natural resource in the South-east along the Haitiano-Dominican border; the expansion of the Orange River bed ; the construction of a reservoir upstream of the city, and the replacement of bridges and watershed management to further protect the city of Jacmel against flooding..."
